Parent Brochures for Elementary Mathematics
Instruction in mathematics incorporates three facets: conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and problem solving. As students use concrete models to represent problem situations, they begin to develop conceptual understanding. Students begin to use representational models as their understanding grows. Multiple experiences with these models allows students to construct strategies for performing the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with numbers. These brochures provide information about the types of models and strategies students will be doing in each grade level.
The Council of the Great City Schools' parent roadmaps in mathematics provide guidance to parents about what their children will be learning and how they can support that learning. These parent roadmaps for each grade level also provide three-year snapshots showing how selected standards progress from year to year so that students will be college and career ready upon their graduation from high school.
