Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing of the English language by developing learners' phonemic awareness [the ability tl hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes] in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns (graphemes) that represent them.

A phoneme is one of the units of sound that distinguishes one word from another. [gestures in the case of sign languages]

CAFE System

CAFE is a set of procedures within the The Daily 5TM framework for structuring literacy time in order to help students develop habits of reading and writing.

Students select from five reading and writing choices (Read to Self, Work on Writing, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work) while the teacher provides instruction to individual students and through whole and small groups.
